Elena Vesnina v Elena Dementieva

It is Elena v Elena out on court number 2 today at noon. The two Russians are first out to battle for a place in the quarter finals. Vesnina has already achieved her best run at the All England Club by reaching the fourth round for the first time whilst Dementieva will be determined to go one better than last years semi final place.

Dementieva is currently ranked number 4 in the world and will be hoping, by the end of Wimbledon, she will be in the top 3. Vesnina is ranked at number 37 in the world, but will rise a few places after her Wimbledon run.

GT Prediction – Vesnina knocked out the Slovakian, Cibulkova in the previous round and will be confident she can knock out another high profile player. We are going with a Russian to win this one. Actually we are going for Elena to win this match. That’s too easy, we will go for the world number 4. Dementieva to win in straight sets.

Philipp Kohlschreiber v Roger Federer

The favourite for this year’s Wimbledon title is first out on Centre Court, which is expected to be a new moment in the Chmpionship’s history because it looks like it will be played with the Centre Court roof on.

Roger Federer is in blistering form on the grass and looks like he is unstoppable at the moment with his power and accuracy demolishing his opponents. Federer is up against world number 32, Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany. Philipp is into the third round for the second time in his career, but has the task of defeating the five-time Wimbledon champion.

GT Prediction - Roger Federer will again progress to the next round with a convincing performance. Kohlschreiber may have to bring his A-game, but even that will not be good enough against the Fed-Express.

Roberta Vinci v Serena Williams

Two-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams is first up on Court 2 today against Italian, Roberta Vinci. The American is looking for her third title at the All England Club and will be battling against world number 53 in the third round today.

Neither girl has lost a set in their previous two rounds meaning we could have a good match on court 2.

GT Prediction - We are going for the American to win this one. On paper Serena should cruise to victory, but we are starting to get to the nitty gritty part of the draw where the opposition gets tougher.

Andy Murray produced a storming performance in his second round match against Ernests Gulbis to set-up a third round encounter against Viktor Troicki. Murray was in confident mood yesterday as he took on the the Latvian. You could sense that the Scot wanted to send a message out to the rest of the men’s draw at Wimbledon especially after Federer had powered his way through to the third round the day before.

The 22-year-old took less than 90 minutes to dispatch his opponent winning 6-2 7-5 6-3 to claim a spot in the third round. Murray is looking the real deal on the court at this years Wimbledon championships. His physical strength is beginning to show as he takes on his opponents which has had  a massive impact in his performances from previous attempts at the All England Club.

If Murray’s first serve % can continue to be as high as it was yesterday (73%), then I believe that even Federer will have a tough time against the British number 1. We won’t get ahead of ourselves just yet, but Murray is looking good. Murray Mania’ hots up!

Andy Murray v Ernests Gulbis

The Murray Mania’ continues on Centre Court later on today and with Federer looking sleek and powerful as ever it is Murray’s turn to respond. This will be a tricky contest for Murray though, Gulbis is a powerful man himself and Andy will have to be at his best to beat the Latvian.

Ernests Gulbis is ranked number: 74 in the world, but does have a lot of potential. He will be looking to reach the third round at Wimbledon for the first time, but he has to overcome crowd favourite and second favourite to the win the competition, Andy Murray.

GT Prediction – Murray will be in a more positive mood after his shaky start in the first round. Expect to see the Scot play some fierce shots against the Latvian. Murray Mania’ continues with convincing win.

Elena Baltacha v Kirsten Flipkens

This is et to be a great spectacle out on Court no: 4. The British no:2 is the only remaining women’s hopeful at Wimbledon making today’s match against Kirsten Flipkens that much harder. Flipkens will be a tough opponent for Baltacha today. The Belgian 23-year-old defeated Agnes Szavay in the first round to reach the second and will be looking to reach the third round for the first time. Baltacha will be looking to equal her best record at Wimbledon. The 25-year-old reached the third round back in 2002 when she was only 18-years-old.

GT Prediction – All eyes will be on Baltacha as she looks to extent the hopeful expectation. We are going to back her in this match. This will be nervy at times, but the Kiev born, Enfield resident will march through to the next round.

Venus Williams v Kateryna Bondarenko

This should be a walk in the park for Williams on Court 1 today. The world number 3 is searching for her sixth Wimbledon singles title and is looking good for it as she enters her second round match against Kateryna Bondarenko. The 22-year-old from Ukraine has a massive task ahead of her and if he wants to progress to the third round of Wimbledon for the first time, then she will have to go out all guns blazing against the current champion.

GT Prediction - The Ukrainian could surprise the American early on and will almost certainly have the crowd backing her, but we are backing Williams to Henman Hill here. Williams goes through.

Juan Martin Del Potro v Lleyton Hewitt

Del Potro will be looking to advance into the third round at Wimbledon for the first time in his, do far, short career. In his way is a former Wimbledon champion and one of the toughest competitors ever to play at the All England Club.

The 20-year-old Argentine is in great form coming into Wombledon after reaching the semi-finals of the French Open earlier this month, but Hewitt is a new man and with his troubling hip injury behind him he looks like he could be back to his best very shortly.

GT Prediction – This will be a hard fought match with plenty of drama along the way. This could be one of the matches of the tournament. We will go for the former Wimbledon champion to scrape through in five sets.

British Tennis Comes Under Fire From Top PLayer

Andy Murray last night branded British tennis as ‘not good enough’. Despite the negativity it’s good to hear it from the top player in British tennis though. If Andy Murray thinks that the talent of British players is not good enough, then tennis’s governing body in the UK, the LTA should be thinking what do we need to improve the current dismal results at Wimbledon and other Grand Slams by our players.

“It is not acceptable, I think the depth needs to get way better. ” – Andy Murray

The British number 1 said the standard is not high enough. He is spot on, we are seeing players from all over the world competing at a higher level than our guys and girls. We have to get this right and soon.

“But they aren’t at the same level as a lot of the guys. They don’t play at this level too often because they’re not ranked that high so when the tight moments come they don’t play as well. It’s not good.” – Andy Murray

Tennis development in the UK needs a resurgence of some kind and Andy Murray will definitely be at the forefront if he can make it to the final at Wimbledon this year. Kids are inspired by special moments and a Murray win at SW19 in the near future would be one of those occasions so no pressure Andy, the future of British tennis is in your hands.

What do you think of the crisis with the current crop of British tennis players?
